Modelling and Animation / Re: [REQUEST] Modeling Tutorial
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:17:11 pm »
First of all, there already is one: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=109

Now there's a huge problem with moddeling tutorials in this scene (not only here on modcraft but also on mmowned and all the other sites).
Moddeling isn't like DBC/DB editing. It's an art. You need to know most of the tools and actions, but even if you do that doesn't by far mean you can do great models.

Of course there are lots of "how to model a tire wheel", "how to model a house" but you don't think the education of a model artist consists of thousands of "how to model every single fuck that is out there", do you?
However this is the case with DB/DBC editing. There's a tutorial for "how to add new items", "how to add new classes" etc. Also World Building to be honest. Yet World Building/Level Design is also an art and that's why there are only about 2% of the world builds done anywhere near "blizzlike" (meaning only 2% can be considered "good", "playable", "nicely looking and fitting for a game")
Taking this back to DBC Editing: you actually need to know only which database consists of what and how to export/import dbcs and how to use the dbc editing tools.
That's pretty simple so if you want to do something new like add a spell that's fucking simple.
However I know of only 2 persons except me that have done this. Wanna know why? There's no tutorial for it. That's it. Creating new spells is even simpler than adding new items. There's no autotool for adding spells and there's no tutorial on it. People are too fucking stupid or too unimaginative to go look into the dbcs and find out themselves which entries to change to create what new spell.

This explanation was needed to understand the explanation why there are hardly any modelling tutorials on these boards:
We are mostly guys who do modding as a hobby and we want to spend time with it, but not waste our time.
Most modellers here have learned modelling by fiddling around with their modelling tool, maybe reading a tutorial or two (and learned new tricks but not the "how to model a tire wheel") and that's it.
Writing a tutorial would only not be a waste of time if there was a clientel worthy to understand it around here.
There isn't. The guys that are able to understand the art of modelling already can, because they learned it by themselves the hard way.
At least that's what we all experienced over and over and over again.

If you're really interested in lerning how to model send me a PM with your skype adress and I will gladly point you to the right things. Once you've then showen some real interest and talent (talent to think abstract, create new models using the tools you have etc) I will point you to more things and so on.
I still consider zax, pinkhair and myself to be pretty much the only "pro" modellers on this community. This is kinda egoistic but the people which know of our models (and aren't 12 year olds totally unexperienced with game design) know that our models can be placed right next to blizzard's models and fit in perfectly. We also can model in totally different styles, not only WoW style.

Yeah I know I'm kinda being an asshole again but actually I just want to be nice. I'm happy for every new person trying to get into real modelling and ant to help them as much as I can but there has just been so much disappointment here that it's hard not to flame everybody new to the subject also the ones really wanting to learn modelling will probably, the onces that don't will fail that's natural selection.
So again, looking for real help? Add me on skype or use the existing tutorials in the internet and get the grip on yourself.
I'd really love to see you being successfull, have fun.

Topic moved, clearly not Modelling and Animation. Try using your brain first next time, thanks.

Eluo once did a fart patch where he replaced every sound from starting WoW to logging in with fart sounds sooo....just go looking around in DBCs, changing stuff, you'll figure it out pretty quickly I suppose.

I'm not familiar with the Murloc Texture Layout but it has to 100% match the layout for humans, orc, draenei etc.
If it does, you're "just a few" DBC changes away from making all that texture-only armor visible. And if you want stuff such as sleeves and belts to show you'll have to copy the geosets and arrange them according to you model. Best thing would be to make new ones since you can't just take the beltXY geoset from a human char and slam it on the murloc. It's a model with vertices and shit, and it's probably now going to "fit" the murloc model.
And If the layout doesn't match you're fucked....unless you create a new model and unwrap/texture it according to that layout, murloc won't ever be able to wear armor with texture components only.

As for the armor using model components in either cases you just have to add the right attachment points...afaik

wtf...I just completed the main quest chain as well....after I had spent 30 hours exploring EVERYTHING I decided to continue the quest chain and BAM! ended FAAAAR too quickly. It was like read this, get this, kill him, teh end. That's sucks...I mean it was epic and all (fuck I love Sovngarde, esp the soundtrack of it) but if I'm not mistaken the main storyline of Oblivion was far longer right?

Oh and am I the only thief/murderer who absolutely hates the absence of a real big city?
Even Bravil and the shitty "small" towns were bigger or at least just as big as Solitude, the biggest city in Skyrim.

Well other than that: absolfuckinglutely love this game. The Elder Scrolls games are one of the last modern games which actually still honor the Roleplaying part in RolePlaying Games.

Oh...in that case: pretty damn blizzlike :D I like it
But seriously...this wouldn't have been the first time somebody took screens from actual WoW content and tried to pass it as their own.

I never played WoW much so I probably can't tell but...didn't you just rename Elwynn Forest?
If so, excellent trolling attempt, go check out MMOwned, it will totaly work there.

Hmm...3ds -> mdx/mdl was never really a problem (even animated models), it was the mdx->m2 part that didn't really work (at least not with models generated with NeoDex). I'm going to try this route out with Mjollna's tutorial today, let's hope it works out fine :)

Nah, 3 hours before this thread opened :D but it's missing the 3ds/obj -> mdx/mdl part.

Nice one. I actually was thinking about asking one of you guys to do such a tutorial a few days ago...now that's what I call telepathy :D
Thanks Mjollna, gonna sticky this one.
