Miscellaneous / Re: Factions
« on: April 10, 2011, 10:18:02 am »
Changing Factions is part of the server-side stuff, the database to be correct.
Editing the database varies greatly depending on what emulator software you're using.

Most server softwares also have their database structures listed and explained somewhere, go look for it and create a new faction row in the corresponding table.

Yesterday ArenaNet announced the new class of GW2: the commando.

See for yourselves:
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/professions/
http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/p ... /commando/

In case they'll take it down (which will probably happen soon because -mark my words- where the commando stands there will be the "mesmer") I'll upload the screens here. My brother told me the skill videos where they showoff a few skills of the commando ( ;) ) have been uploaded to youtube already.

This:

Quote from: "Tigurius"
people having to less brain and skill to use them probably.

and that:

Quote from: "SirFranc"
Take also count of the playerbase of both game, WoW is designed for the masses, especially the little fat kids that want to feel someone with their shining epic gear or fapping on some naked elf.

I guess there's nothing more to add.

We here at Modcraft don't laugh at MMowned for no reasons you know ;)

I guess you're pretty much right about all of it.
I especially agree with you on the artist part, because it is a type of art which sadly not many people are able to handle right (there are maybe 3-5 people who create beautiful worldbuilds although it isn't that hard, and the rest just suck)

While sites like MMowned just had "Model Editing" clashed into one category, here at Modcraft we created all these different categories because they are all part of WoW modding and it is completely stupid to smash it all into one category, because it deserves more.

I must admit that I am losing my patience though. Seeing as Eluo (and many others such as Steff and Tigu, including myself) put so much effort in answering questions and creating tutorials there should be much more than a handful of people who can handle the artisimal part of modding (including modelling, texture creation, design, music) but no...there aren't. This scene, though a few years (2-3 if I'm correct) still features a vast majority of users completely lacking any skills at all - first of all what it seems most of them lack brains.

This might add a new aspect to your thread and I hope you don't mind, but it's something that has bothered me for such a long time and I've yet only spoken to Eluo and only a few others about it:
You can't even dare to compare this modding scene with other games.
Games far less famous than WoW contain modding scenes where this giant majority of the members of the WoW modding scene would only be smiled upon.
So, there's this giant lack of skill or at least of people with mediocre skill in whatever (although there are much more capable scripters than artists)

Level Design / Re: Map Editing ilegal?
« on: March 28, 2011, 11:44:49 am »
The thing with this discussion is that there is so much bullshit here and everywhere else about WoW modding that nobody knows what's right and what's wrong, they just repeat the same bullshit someone else said on some other place.

Since I don't want to ruin this nice tradition, here's what I've heard mixed with my own thoughts (this is probably true for germany only):

If you make Blizzlike Servers, you're fucked.
If your server is less than 90% of Blizzards Servers, you're okay.
Modding WoW (what this site truely is about, not setting up Private Servers, especially not Blizzlike) is always legal, unless you sell it

And for the selling part, there's always a way: have them pay for account creation, download the client from other servers and your hackpatch should contain a high percentage of custom content (100% and you're absolutely on the cool side) and you're totally fine. It's not only legal, you're able to make money of it.

Although I'm not very sure about the selling part, I am about modding, such as Map Editing, what the thread is about. Think about it. If you create new content in an environment created by Blizzard, this doesn't make it Blizzard's stuff. It's your stuff. You can do with it whatever you like.
Your stuff just won't work without Blizzard's environment but this environment is free to download for all sooo.... :ucheers:

Miscellaneous / Re: Cant Add new Maps to Arcemu Server

Made me laugh quite hard.
I hit "Search", selected the [TUTORIAL] prefix and entered "worldbuilding", selected "search within -> topic titles" and kazaam...ONE entry found: Eluo's previously mentioned tutorial.
Can't hold this back much longer...is it just me or are the new guys getting more stupid these days?

Coming up: an IQ test instead of email confirmation when registering  :ucheers:

Eluo's Worldbuilding Thread probably contains everything you have to know about worldbuilding. You can find it here: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=26

Seeing as the anvil is a gameobject it probably refers to the gameobject id, which should be somewhere serverside.

Random / Re: thread rating system & thanks
« on: March 13, 2011, 08:58:54 pm »
No.
We've decided to not go with a rating system etc long before this forum went public. We see how it has destroyed MMOwned and other WoW Private Server communities and this isn't the way we want it to go.

We want the control of what is good and what isn't to be decided by quality and not by the quantity of friends the poster has.
Yes, democracy is a good thing but if we let all the people decide we will have to change the slogan. With big quantity comes bad or mediocre quality. And we don't want that.

Important and good threads get stickied by the mods and the mods are very experienced modders. See the line there?
As soon as the forum gets flooded by superb threads we would post a sticky containing links to all the important threads, but as long as this is not the case it's more a sign of laziness to not click through the ~10-20 tutorial threads or a sign of stupidity to not being able to tell what's important and what isn't (and we don't like neither lazy nor stupid people, I'm just saying)

What schlumpf said + the big mountain needs a darker rock texture (that's why blizzard uses brown on yellow/pale sand, to create some contrast) and also there's no shoreline...water, especially the sea varies greatly in its height, thus leaving a shoreline everywhere it hits land, just looks absolutetly unrealistic that way.

No, any DBC updates have to be both in the client and the server.
