you're likely "converting" them wrong.

This is most likely due to m2 version number being incorrect - open 010 and apply the m2template, I think it's the first section where version number is, I think wotlk is version number 264 but I may be wrong, try setting it to this and it should work. If not make sure 264 is correct for wotlk.
When I try to apply m2 template it throws errors for me. And using only catatowotlk makes my model a square with blue/white squares. (trying to port wod model to wotlk) There should be some guide here truth be told. Every topic has only answers like "duh you have to look for a particle and change them to wotlk, what can't you understand ?" And I'm like WTF ? Should I use a notepad for this or what ?
