[SUGGESTION] [NOGGIT] Object duplication option
« on: June 18, 2016, 11:18:38 am »
I would love to suggest a new option: Object duplication/replication.

Just same stuff as CTRL+C and CTRL+V but done in single step with e.g. CTRL+D. Guess that would be good. Also, there could be input fields for configurable x, y and z-stepping or even rotation and scale. So e.g. you want 10 bushes in a nice, even row... you set X-stepping to e.g. 2 and press CTRL+D ten times. There we go... what do you think, guys?

Perfectly even rows are unnatural and should be avoided ;)

Although he is right with ctrl+d option. When I started learning to use Maya, I really realized how horribly tedious it sometimes is in Noggit to use actually 2 steps instead of one. I would also like to see range of random values used by copy random tilt, scale and rotation options being cofigurable - right now its fixed +-5% or ° I think. Sometimes are 5° too much and sometimes is 5% scale not enough.

Finally, why do models have to try to appear on vertex when they are being spawned "on mouse cursor"? Why can't they simply really be spawned on terrain where mouse cursor really is?

Plenty of things about working with models in noggit are quite inconvenient. What can literally hurt is havving to keep pressing ctrl, shift or alt all the time, for every single task, no matter if its related to working with models or with terrain. My left little finger is always getting convulsions after few hours of work. I love Maya's way of working with middle mouse button, for example.

Of course. But once we have such row we can take care of making it more natural as needed. I just gave a simplest example i could think of. There are also other uses for such tool where perfect alignment might be important and helpful, e.g. putting some columns, building stuff using planks, etc.

@Amaroth can't agree with your more :) It's basically about ergonomy as my fingers hurt too, indeed. And yes, merging 2 key combos into 1 was the most important thing behind my suggestion and while at it adding a few extras to make replication better would also be fun. Not just for designers but for mighty coders of Noggit, too.

I fixed that here : https://bitbucket.org/berndloerwald/nog ... at=default

You'll have it if you take this version : viewtopic.php?f=48&t=10512

I'm not using the newest version yet, simply because I can't afford getting my current project slowed down or even ruined by some unexpected bug - I just need to keep using version which can be called "proved to be stable". I've read changelog though, but it seems I've somehow missed that particular point there. Thanks for changing it, big thumb up for that, but most of the rest of my post still applies I guess.

What i can tell you is that newest seems very stable and i haven't found any issues so far. I just wish there were nightly (or at least weekly) windows builds so i could test them without need to compile on my own. I bet many more people would do that, too. Which would lead to more efficient bug hunting.

With the use of the libs repo it is so easy to build noggit.
2 clones cmake build done...

Well it's just that i'm mostly linux guy when it comes to stuff and i have very low experience with compiling on windows. I even failed to compile specific map extractor that i need very much... not sure where to ask for help.

Custom Noggit compile would be great though. I could implement some simple changes/functions in SDL instead of begging for them to happen like cursor settings auto-save or object replication with an evil twist or even object-to-file keyboard shortcut :D

Not to mention scripting API for Noggit.

BUT. All this should not go to the sdl version but to QT.
Also compiling means create the project with cmake (on linux you must also do this) and then klick the solution file to open up in visual studio, change to release and hit compile....

I have compiled TC2 on my own a few times on both Windows and Linux and still am a little bit lost when it comes to compiling Noggit. Are libs so freaking big that after 5 minutes I am still at 0% of downloading with 150kB/s speed? Maybe some short manual would come in handy.

Yes, the compressed size if about 2GB if I remember correctly because boost takes a lot of place, so if you already have boost installed it'd be a lot faster to install the lib manually.

All libraries we use except for storm have official binaries that are smaller in size as they don't contain build temporaries etc like steff's repository does. They are also not specific to the versions of compilers and OS like Steff's. I highly recommend you to use those, and the Qt branch readme shows how trivial it is to build NoggIt when doing so.

Having gigabytes of library binaries that aren't even stripped installs in a git repository is a horribly bad idea.

Indeed. Well, I have started downloading it anyway. Everything will take much more time, especially for me, but I'm not confident enough to install things I need by hand. I can work on my project while this is downloading, so its not too big deal, I just wanted to make sure that I'm not doing something completely wrong.

That's why i don't like compiling on Win. It is such a mess to me, so many options, windows, etc. and of course tons of libs that are always missing and misterious errors plus it just seems much slower to compile. On linux it somehow works in a few simple steps and without GUI even.

BTW why changes/improvements only to QT and not SDL?
