[TUTORIAL] Fixing WoD M2 Particles From Crashing Game Client
« on: August 20, 2014, 04:32:15 am »
Since I'm leaving, I figured I'd post something for people. I'm not completely sure how definite this method is as I've not actually bothered with converting WoD M2's just yet.  But going from what Mr. Farrare, it seems to do the trick for most things.

The screenshot is of the Blackhand m2 file Mr. Farrare had sent me in Early April,  as to if the current WoD models still require this or not is beyond me but given that people are still doing show offs with Particle Emitters turned off, it's probably not the case.

It's not an indepth tutorial, mainly because there's not much to do... convert your m2 file, fix the particle, and run the m2 template, then view the amount of textures you have and your particles and see what texture they use, fix it and there you go.  In some instances like for Blackhand I had to make a duplicate of the texture and color it myself since I couldn't remember how to set the particles color properly.

End Result, you can't really see it but take my word for it. Image taken in Cataclysm but the particle output is the same deal, if you don't fix it, it also crashes in Cataclysm.

Almost all the models from your big collection have particles, so I suspected you knew the secret.

Thank you for sharing it!! :)

Cata/Mop particles crash 3.3.5
I assumed this tutorial was a fix for that?

I cannot find documentation on fixing particles and Mjollna's converter does not fix particles.

when I converted Mop and Cata .m2 by Mjollna converter I didn't have problem with particules and as it says in the title of the post Fixing WOD not mop and cata but if it fixed your problem with cata or mop then im happy to know that

Most of these problems are very simple, people just overlook them...

I got a question,

I have fixed the particles from the UI_Orc model, but every texture from particles is not transparent.

Here's a screenshot:

What may cause that?

Thanks.

Very likely that you have a wrong flag.

http://www.wowdev.wiki/index.php?title=M2/WotLK#Particle_emitters

It seems to be wrong texture id, idk about flag, but with my test I didn't ever get the same result as on the screen (I use 4 flag for almost all new particles, it works just fine). I recommend you, Krang Stonehoof, make few experiments with textures on this particle, choose the one that seems to be ok to you (check blp file by file) in the current time it is the only way to get good looking particle.

*Or you can combine few blps as Anthony did and then set them (one edited file) in particle as a texture for better result.

Can I ask you how I can do that? I'm pretty new to that.

And isn't there any way to figure out the right texture for each particles? In that .m2 there are 13 particles and like 40 textures...

Well if you compare it with live you will see it uses smoke and fire so.... there is only 1 smoke and 1 fire texture that are new for WoD so not that hard to find out and they are normally at the bottom of the list of textures.
