[SHOWOFF] Modified Theramore
« on: November 03, 2017, 03:01:59 am »
Hi guys! First of all, I wanted to thank you for all your tutorials, posts, tools, software, anyway, everything you've made here on Modcraft. Without you, I couldn't be able to even try to modify a single tree on WoW, and certainly I wouldn't call this one of my hobbies! Your effort keeps this community alive and, while I just registered, I have been from the outside watching and learning.

So, this is a showoff after all. I'm really an amateur, and every map edited is probably not a great work, but I like some of the results. I started to use noggit wanting to make one of my favorite cities, Theramore, bigger than what we have/had on WoW. After Warcraft 3, where Theramore was this great island, a great human city on Kalimdor, a real capital of the Alliance, I was very dissapointed that, ingame, it was just a walled isle. Since day 1, my dream was to see it bigger, better, more relatable to its own lore.

Anyway, I didn't have the experience, nor the style, and so I wanted to emulate the original estetic of the city while making it look more like the "citadel" its supposed to be. After that, I took some liberties, and suddenly some roleplaying needs came up (this map is currently used on a spanish-speaking roleplay server called "Elseworld of Warcraft"), so I had to expand to the continent, adding a new, poorer discrict.

My work at Kalimdor goes beyond Theramore, but this is the zone I've invested most of my time. I hope you like it and, if you want, leave me some suggestions and critics!

It may look a little empty -and it is. Is just that I'm not very good with little details, and NPCs, and... stuff.  ;D

The second town, the one with a more ruined look I think is too crowded with buildings(houses). Although in some parts it look fine in some others it doesn't, especially at the inn where the small house is blocking the front side of the inn building. Also at the part where there are some pines behind the statue, I think the pines could have been with a different color to match the ambience around, a less green one. In general great detailing!

Thanks for your opinions and suggestions!

Yes, I wanted to make it feel "more" than the original, that was jus a kind-of town around a tower. Things evolutionated from there, and had to make it even bigger. Stories happened on this server, and stuff isn't so great for people on the east, so Theramore has an important inmigrant influx. Without more space on the island (because its "reserved" for the original citizens and people who have the coin to pay), these inmigrants had to establish themselves on the continent.

That's why the second town, or the "low city", is crowded: not much space, a lot of people, few resources, poverty and crime everywhere. Though the authorities had to build outer defenses to keep this unexpected new district of the city secure, the new walls have just made worse the problem, limiting even more the space. An so, this place is completely overpopulated.

And yes! Good catch there with the pines! Right now I don't have many models, so I had to improvise with what was at the reach of my hand. I've been telling myself "Dude, those little trees are better taken care, that's why are greener. Look! Some even have their own pots!" but that's only excuses, haha.

Besides that, my work with Theramore includes a route to Northwatch Hold (slighty expanded, aswell) and, from there, a route to Ratcher. Kalimdor feels a lot smaller after that.

Thanks for explaining the lore behind it since it makes things have more sense. Some places, especially the roads look very good and unique, and I know that in wow you cannot make good cities using only the same buildings over and over again. Right now I would suggest only to remove that house before the inn, just my opinion since it looks more like it was misplaced and I think, judging from the pic is even touching other houses which will be seen more like a glitch than an intentional thing by other players. As I said before, great detailing, good luck with your next works.

Well, I do have the link of a new version of the map -and others. It may have some problems if I used some models that we use on the server, but if you are interested you can send me a PM  ;D
