What tools to use
« on: August 23, 2015, 07:16:17 am »
Hello community!

I want to get a good list of what tools you use for your modding tasks.
It should get a base for our resources section.

I want to collect a list for wotlk and wod.
So please add for what version you work.

WotLK:

*MyDBCEditor - For fuck's sake, isn't there ANY better app?
*Taliis - I use it only for DBCs which can't be opened by MyDBC
*DBCUtil - sadly it currupts DBCs it creates sometimes
*Noggit 1.4SDL - obviously
*MPQEditor -  obviously, would recommend some older version which doesn't have chance to corrupt for MPQ outdated WotLK files
*BLiPSter - throw BLPConverter to garbage
*FuckItUp - for releases distributed to players
*GroundEffectAdder
*GruulMeWDT
*WoWModelViewer
*HxD - for minor edits if you don't have 101
*101 editor - would any cracked version be possible?
*WMOEditor - again, this tools has functionality on level "pain in the ass", but still is useful sometimes
*WoW Machinima Tools - for Light settings editing great hack
*LightMapper
there was also some editor for light DBCs, I forgot its name...
*ADTAdder
*FuTa

Whew... An all that stuff for model converting, editing and so on.

  • DBCUtil.exe for converting DBC->CSV and CSV->DBC. It works on almost every DBC file.
  • CSVed for editing CSV files converted with DBCUtil.exe. Most people seem to use Tallis or MyDBCEditor, but both of those programs are pretty shitty to use IMHO.
  • Noggit
  • BLPNG Converter
  • EXE Patcher for 3.3.5a that removes the check for Glues.xml.
  • Ladik's MPQ Editor. I use a specific version so that it doesn't obfuscate the filenames/folder structure.
  • SAI Editor is good for, well, editing SAI. Although it's a bit of a pain in the ass to use sometimes.
  • StoneHarry's Spell Editor
  • Truice is good for editing the Trinity database, but the program is pretty-much pointless if you don't mind using HeidiSQL and the Trinity documentation.
  • HeidiSQL
  • My own tools, but that's just because I use them lol...
  • HxD for swapping model textures.

I just know that those converters exist, but I don't use them. I never had time and energy to learn how to and more importantly, to actually use those ones. I had always had more than enough work with things I already know, since I am more server developer and GM/admin than for-fun developer. Guys like Anthony or Alastor will be better contributors to this part of list.

I'm not using an awful lot of tools at the moment. But mostly because I don't have an awful lot of spare time to invest.

In alphabetical order:
ADT Adder - Mostly for when I'm creating new maps.
CASCView - For when I'm in need of files from WoD or another Blizzard game.
Futa - It's a giveaway.
GruulMe - In my opinion the best WDT editor available. Works with Cataclysm and Pandaria features as well, not sure about WoD.
Modelviewer - Well, not really a worldbuilding/editing tool, but useful nonetheless.
MPQ Editor - A giveaway as well.
Noggit - Duh.
Taliis - I have it on my PC, old habits die hard. Don't really use it anymore.

Several converters as well, WMO, M2, BLP. Nothing special there.

Just realised I currently don't even have a decent DBC editor...
