4th and 5th parts are up. Which concludes the first section of the basics: Eventually I will get around to making the cleanup series, but I probably need to sharpen up my photoshop skills first.

Think that's another issue. These days you can never make anything for others and expect much (if any) appreciation. Even common curiosities like "thanks for the share" are dwindling. It somewhat fueled larger communities, now it's... Well... Gone.

Tutorials / [TUTORIAL] Interface Modding - Character Create Screen
« on: January 29, 2014, 01:15:40 am »

Introduction

What's up guys, this is going to be a video series of how to mod the interface and will branch out of various areas, starting with modding the Create a Character screen. It will hopefully teach you how to work your way around the interface XML and Lua files, but more importantly it will hopefully help you teach yourself in the future.

Disclaimers

- I am hopeless and seeing through things like this, so don't be too surprised if it comes to an abrupt halt. I apologize for that, but it's just something I do and can't promise any different.
- This is all going to be for the WoW 3.3.5a client, however I doubt that much will change in terms of using Lua and XML for newer versions.

Prerequisites

Requirements

- WoW 3.3.5a (Wrath of the Lich King)
- Custom WoW.exe with GlueXML check removed (See Recommended): viewtopic.php?f=26&t=181
- Knowledge on how to create patches (See Recommended): viewtopic.php?f=26&t=41
- Knowledge on how to extract interface files: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=41

Recommended

- No more patches: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1828
- Remove GlueXML Check Tool: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=883
- Instead of the above 2, you can just download my WoW.ex: https://www.mediafire.com/?0wsv4j9391j3a6h
- Notepad++ (It's a godsend)
- Create a shortcut to your WoW.exe, right-click it, go to properties, at the end of the Target add -console

Workboard / [TUTORIAL] Interface Modding - Character Create Screen

WORKBOARD NOTE: This is a video tutorial series, I have completed the first episode and it is currently being uploaded. Just using this to post referred links and stuff for now. Also, what section of the forums should I post it in? It's basically UI modding the character create screen.

Serverside Modding / Re: [C++] Talent Points Per Level

At the time of this post that option did not exist within the TrinityCore config. And if it doesn't exist: Create it. Which apparently is exactly what TC did.

To put more of a negative reflection on it all as balance in my honest opinion: WoW modding has seen better days in some respects. Modcraft is one of the few (English speaking) sites worth even looking at, the community is the only one that still actively helps on a level of more or less "equal" contribution. Most other sites are just veterans answering newbies questions to keep the site alive. No new tutorials or re-written tutorials are really done by anyone.

For myself personally, I don't know if it's me truly burnt out on WoW in general, or that I am just not creative enough to find new things to fuel my creative drive, but I don't even have WoW installed anymore. My extent of WoW modding is answering friends on Skype. I haven't been on Ownedcore in 6 months to a year, or even taken the time to read posts on here.

Some other people also like myself move on to other things to fill their creative appetite, with things such as ComputerCraft on Minecraft, or other games that require scripts to be written. Which is all well and good, but I don't think enough new people are coming into the WoW modding to fill the void of those leaving or not posting anymore.

The reason I think it's slowly dwindling is because of the larger modding sites like AC-Web and Ownedcore. These sites, while they do not share the level of experience per person as smaller communities, that's exactly what they are needed for. They are gateways that are easily found for newer modders to start learning. But most of those communities are stale as all hell and don't retain enough new people for them to eventually get to a level to post their own content.

Another factor is 3.3.5 has been researched to death, which is certainly a good thing if documented, which it is. But it leaves very little for the less experienced modders to explore. One of the things that many modders thrive on is exploration in attempt to understand the emulation system. These days to really find or create something truly new, you need a much higher level modding skill than you used to. This lowers many newer peoples creative drive as the sense of accomplishment is a matter of following already documented stuff.

That's my opinion on it at least, but I haven't done anything in quite a while now, nor have I been actively reading the forums. So I could be wrong about the larger sites, but I doubt it.

Random / Re: Motivation
« on: September 18, 2013, 12:00:45 pm »
Thanks everyone for your replies and suggestions guys.

@ProfVice: Problem for me is most mods I make are very based on per server. As in, I have no point in making boss scripts on a server I make a custom battlegrounds game-type. If I focus on the things I can do, I get lost in what I should do.

None of my friends play WoW or have any experience in modding or game development. And posting on here, I tend to start something and not finish it, as I turn it into an obligation, as it says to me, you started something, you must finish it.

@Steff: I have considered doing some work for Maruum. But again, with my motivation I don't want to make empty promises.

@relaxok: I definitely know what you mean by that depressive state you reach. However I have taken a break, a massive break. I left the server I was on, at the end of December last year. In that time I have started a youtube channel for CoD, played hours of many other games, developed small programs and experimented with some game development. I've continued my social life, started Uni (where I learned basic modelling). So many things in between this time. But the desire is still gone. And while I'm not as much in the depressive state of I wonder why I am not in the mood, I am wondering if I can even get it back. This temporary break I started, is becoming permanent, which I don't like.

@Solarion: I do a lot of that stuff, including LoL and sometimes Yu-Gi-Oh. I play(ed) lots of CoD. I am in communities for OCE LoL and for Arma 2 and Arma 3.I used to be similar with the do what I feel like, however the feel like never is WoW modding.

@Everyone. Thanks for the suggestions, and don't take my responses as brushing it off with excuses or explanations. I am currently thinking, that perhaps delving deeper into model development might spark something. As learning something knew has always been a drive, and modelling is something I have an abundance to learn on quickly, even at a basic level.

I apologize if this is a bit long, but I feel deeper explanation is helpful. You can skip to the question section if you want.

-=== Back-story ===-

Basically, a while back I worked on a project that was a complete overhaul of WoW. While I was there I was the main developer, to which there really was only 2 of us working on the server consistently. When I was working on this project, I was highly motivated, because it was something I really enjoyed doing. Some days I would spend over 18 hours on it if I felt like it.

Anyway, this went on for a few months of countless hours of development. Eventually I got to the point, where everything felt like an obligation. I was no longer modding for the sake of enjoying it. I tried many things to help re-motivate myself, including teach people to do some of my jobs so in the long run I would have to do less work. By the end of it, things worked, but not enough to make me enjoy myself. I ended up just procrastinating, I couldn't force myself to do the work. It got the point where I felt I was more a hindrance than a help, because people would have to wait for me to do something they couldn't, meaning their production was dependent on my effort. So, I decided to resign, with the option of returning when I felt like it.

I watched the server progress for a little while, but never felt the want to mod, even on home servers for testing. Eventually the owner gave up on the server and it died out.

After that I followed some other projects, had a couple offers to do work or join them, however I still could not muster up the want to do the modding, and with that I declined nearly anything that came my way. I came to the realization, that anything further than opinions and advice, I wasn't going to be up for.

-=== Present ===-

Now, while this whole time I have been neglecting something I used to enjoy, I was fully aware of that note. I used to really enjoy modding. I still enjoy programming/scripting/modding other games etc... But for some reason I am struggling with WoW. But knowing how much I enjoyed WoW modding, makes me want to get back into it. However I am at a constant battle with motivation. The best way to explain this is with a simple 0-10 scale representing when I feel burnt out on modding.

When I used to mod, I would need to reach 10/10 for work load to feel burnt out of modding. Now it seems, it's only at like a 3/10, and each time I mod my threshold gets lower.

-=== Question ===-

I want to reverse this burnt out threshold point. I want to be able to do large amounts of modding again, I want to enjoy WoW-modding again. But I need suggestions on how to retain motivation, or how to get myself re-enthused.

So my question is, what do you guys do to retain your motivation? And what do you think I should do?

-=== Thank you for the effort if you actually read the whole thing ===-

MMOWNED/AC-Web had a lot of talented modders too, but I think it was more a matter of larger numbers and probability. Modcraft certainly has a higher skill level per person, which I think counts for a lot more.

Either way, welcome to the community, hope it works out for you here :)

Sounds like a pretty good system. Reminds me of the Runescape clan system, or at least on the progression side of things.

Both flags are apart of a single image. If you were to scale it in any way, the whole image would scale and end up askew (Or at the very least unclean). Your best bet is to just extract the blp, convert it to png, and edit it down in size buy cutting a section out.

Serverside Modding / Re: [SOLVED] New reputation
« on: August 16, 2013, 06:39:41 am »
@ Daweo

1. The numbers it's converting to is just the decimal equivalent of the hexidecimal. It should convert it back when needed. It's the same think it was, just read differently. Different programs will read it differently too (MyDBCEditor will read the hexidecimal, Taliis will read the decimal equivalent.

2. The error you got was a buffer overflow/overload (I don't know the technical terms). Not exactly sure where you said you put the extra 0, but adding it to the buffer should work (and has in my experience before all this table emphasis of trinitycore).

3. However, you are using the ID 10000? That's ridiculously high considering the current list is only about 2000. A THEORY to why it's not working is the ID at 10000 read as a hexidecimal (dunno why it would do that) would equal 65536 decimal, which to my memory in a lot of table data the limit is  65535. Not even joking, you could be 1 too high lol. Try a lower number.

4. Just a warning, you are only at the tip of the iceberg for the annoyance that is the reputation system... The reputation system is very very touchy and not something I recommend fiddling with unless you are really good at problem solving WoW modding.
