The Burning Crusade.

Was simply awesome. The fact that we could see the difference between the Vanilla content and the TBC content was something that kept us, the players, playing.

I like vanilla as it is a lot more traditional and normal looking.

My favorite expansion of Level Design is ofcourse Mists of Pandaria, the scalable environment textures and all the HQ-Content is simply amazing, but for means of gameplay I prefered Vanilla and TBC when Group Quests was actually Group Quests and 40 man raids, ment 40 man. Creature and Character Model is Cataclysm, couse I simply think they brought alot more interesting creatures into the game.

I am in love with TBC gear. But I guess the most popular X-Pac around is WOTLK, most of people who play on private servers play 3.3.5a.

Cata and MoP have the best level design and questing. TBC has the best PvE. And WotLK has the best lore :)

Vanilla. Although I am torn between pre-BWL or post-BWL.

I personally love the aesthetic and design philosophy behind the pre-WotLK versions. It felt like the game was still firmly rooted in the traditional 'Warcraft' appearance (WC III). They began to add HD textures and shadow effects in WotLK - I loved WotLK for everything else it offered, but I felt that the graphics began to detract from the original Warcraft appeal. Nevertheless, this is nothing compared to the lore and zones in WotLK. Northrend has to be one of my favourite zones simply because of how it was designed, the story behind it, and the questlines there.

I enjoyed every expansion before Cataclysm in their own way. For example, Vanilla was challenging and had a great aesthetic and gameplay appeal. You were endowed with a real sense of 'achievement' when you leveled up or did a certain quest, because the gameplay was challenging yet enjoyable all at the same time.

Cataclysm introduced a lot of interesting technical developments, such as quest phasing and advanced graphics. However, the game became adulterated for younger players who were not geared to the kind of difficult content that was seen in Classic and TBC. I felt the game, its' story and its' gameplay, became dumbed-down and childish and most importantly began to detract from the original 'Warcraft' aesthetic and design. Although, saying this, I can't argue that Cata and MoP look terrible at all. They look brilliant, and the level design is brilliant - but it doesn't look 'Warcraft'. The only thing I really enjoy about Cataclysm is the fact that they (finally) added foxes as creatures.. and Gil'neas.

The latter of days of WotLK seemed like a huge let-down for me. The 'achievement' system and 'advanced' LFG system was enough to grind my gears when WotLK initially released, but when FotLK came out I felt like Blizzard had become a little out-of-touch.. or maybe, I became out of touch with the direction they were headed in. The Lich King's death was, imo, a terrible climax to a brilliant story. It would of been so much better if they had done more with FotLK - for example, an AQ-like event at the gates of Icecrown Citadel, where you must gather resources and whatnot in order to aid the Ashen Verdict in breaking down the door into the citadel. After all, Warcraft players had been waiting since 2003 to destroy the Lich King. It could've been much more than dungeons and dailies. I think the same can be said, in part, for the Black Temple. At least Sunwell Plateau had some kind of opening event.

For these reasons, I'd have to say Vanilla is my favourite expansion in terms of aesthetic and gameplay, followed closely by TBC in gameplay and WotLK in aesthetic and I guess in lore too. Cataclysm and onwards may have looked great and made the game much more accessible, but I feel that they soiled it. /rantover

Well said amberwell. Well said.

Aside from considering Northrend a zone.  It's a continent, not a zone.

Aside from considering Northrend a zone.  It's a continent, not a zone.

Except that Northrend is a zone by definition...

zone, noun
an area or stretch of land having a particular characteristic, purpose, or use, or subject to particular restrictions.

Lorewise, yeah, you can say it's a continent. That doesn't mean it can't be loosely referred to as a zone. And especially in-game, since realistically continents don't exist in WoW. They're all small islands. Though either way you look at it, it was kinda pointless and disrespectful to criticize someone's post due to vocabulary.

My fav was TBC then vanilla.
My favorite dungeon was always vanilla scarlet monastery and after that kara.
SM had this super cool event at the cathedral end and seeing both as children playing this scene in the caverns of time was priceless! Kara was super fun because it had so many different things in it. :)

The coolest new stuff was flying (druid flight form was so great) and the awesomely torn apart Outland. And I love Illidan. :D A shame he had to die though. :/

I kinda liked cata for the whole cataclysm part and the new terrain phasing, but after tbc I lost touch with the game so I never really played it much.

Based on armor... I think either Vanilla or TBC too. I really liked the death and cold themed wrath stuff, but it was a little too much. And maybe tier sets lost it's epicnes when everybody had one. Loved the Shaman set with wolf heads and the druid sets with antlers, and of course the warlock head on spikes set. xD
Oh before I forget. The coolest item in the whole game was vanilla. This super cool hat you get in tanaris with... 23 intelligence or something like that. The one that covered your eyes and made you look totally badass. xD Wore it with all my characters regardless of class. :D

NPC-wise... Well they obviously look better in mop/cata than in tbc/vanilla... And I liked the hair styling stuff in wrath and most new haircuts npcs and players could get that way. But I never really cared for how they look. Lore-wise people felt more grounded and believable at the beginning. Ok in TBC a bunch of the best and strongest stormed Outland... So it kinda explains why all people there are tough guys... But I liked the game more when not the whole universe was at stake. xD Later it felt like you were a super hero who killed like every major threat to the whole world. I liked mobs like van cleef or hogger more than arthas or deathwing.

Yeah... sorry for the wall of text, memories took over. :)
