[SOLVED] Basics of Model editing: Blizz model ?
« on: November 15, 2012, 10:33:29 pm »
Hello everyone,
so here is what I am trying to do. I want to remove the sword guard from the "sword_1h_katana_b_01"
This weapon:

And I want to remove the black area:

Obviously, I want to re-attach the blade to the hilt.

I followed Jack's Tutorial (Click me) regarding custom models. I extracted the weapon as milkshape model (.ms3d) with WMV (7.0.1 r640), converted it with Milkshape to .3ds and started to do just that (remove the verticles from the guard and fit it onto the hilt). No issues until this point. Not perfect, but decent enough imo. Starting to get the hang with 3ds studio max.

Note that when I exported the weapon, it gave a warning about the texture on the hilt, which didn't seem crucial to me. Still exported as expected and gave no further error.

Now, I saved it as .3ds again (new file), used the "3dstom2.exe" converter and tried to convert it to .m2. It crashes on the bones, which obviously have not been extracted.

Earlier, I used the WMV to export it to 3ds immediately. I had bones there and could still edit it, but it had several geosets (they were duplicates). Removing them and trying the same procedure led to the same error.

My question is more for the "advanced" users, but how would you go along this ? Tried to edit an 1.1.x version of the blade on mdlvis, but geosets were also messed up and editing with MDLvis is... terrible in my opinion. So this is

Without tutors in MDlvis you can make the models only for warcraft 3. (MDLvis 3d editor for war3 - not for wow) (but ofc ... i see .. some guys convert models from mdlvis to m2 ..) Yes - this is possible, but you need a big help from more experienced users. Now people are able to convert from mdlvis to m2 about 6-7. Inico knows MDlvis from 2008, im also know from about 2008. The other five people have learned from me. But now most likely not who are not able teach new peoples.

best method for any weapons editing - MDLvis, Zim4ik can this via blender, but most likely will not tell how he did it.

For comparison (approximate) Hardometer:

Reskinswap(weaponcreatures): 0.210 - 25-35k
Reskin(bodybody armor): 0.510  1500-3500
World building(editing blizz zones): 0.710 1000-3000
World building(from zero on new map): 110 500-900

Hex convert from expansion to expansion(m2): 210 100-200
Newmodify creature or race from blender: 3.510 20-100
Simple modeling from MDLvis(to wow): 510 5-20
Animated modeling(creature) from MDLvis(to wow): 6.510 >2-5
Blizzlike animated creature from MDlvis(to wow): 7.510 1-2
Blizzlike character from MDlvis(to wow): 9.510 1-2

-------
Learning "how to convert from mdl to m2" will take about two weeks, I have no free time.
Many people ask "please write a tutor", I have reasons for not doing this. I'm Russian but Russians(others) did not appreciate the work of others.
They steal my work and making money on this. (wowjp.net e.t.c wow portals)
So sometimes I help people in PM,  Provided, however, that they already good know(models from zeroanimating from zerotexturing e.t.c) MDLvis

recently i help to this guy memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=595
You can ask him anything, I hope it will help.

Thanks Phucko.

About that Vel, it's less that I force anyone to write a tutorial. If someone writes one, it's done out of pure personal efforts. Yet, I tried following the local tutorials and might have done something wrong, yet can't find the mistake after repeating the same step. I was asking more around the lines of "how would you start ? Would you start this or that way...", etc.
I appreciate your post never the less.

EDIT:
Still faced with some problems, but else I wanted to update the thread and mark it as solved for the great help Phucko and Vel gave me. Thanks a lot for everything!
