[SHOWOFF] Terror Vale
« on: February 16, 2015, 11:00:41 pm »
Ohai modcraft, so this is my first showoff ever on this forum and I'm not that much of a skillful modder. Whatever, here's a project I started some months ago and which is still in progress (Yeah i'm a lazyass). Don't be too harsh  :?

A little bit of the story :

Basically, it's a region in a post-apocalyptic Azeroth where people wake up with severe amnesia to find themselves under the tyrannic rule of Governer Lestat and his nobles (Mainly the first ones ever to wake up under the Dreaming Oak). Life is pretty harsh and protagonists will eventually experience some dreadful events. The Terror Vale is under the control of Lady Anafeloz, a sadistic dwarf, and her small army : "Les Veilleurs". This region is more hostile to life than Marshmotte (the domain of the Governor) which gave Lady Anafeloz a certain degree of Independance from the totalitarian rule of the other nobles. Still, her rule is quiet as much of a tyranny as the Governor's. The village of Riponne is barely the only safe place in the Terror Vale, however, under the watch of Her Cruelty safety isn't a warranty.

Screen time !

Yeah, it's basically an area change of Deadwind Pass but more modifications are coming.

Well, thank you :D

By the way the skybox and the light are going to be replaced by a much darker, deep night one.

Looks great, a creative use of an old zone. Good atmoshere. The lore sounds cool too, but it seems like you should just go for your own original setting rather than sticking to Azeroth; might be more appropriate and give you more freedom.

True that. Well at first I wanted to do something outside of Azeroth and it's Lore but I quickly ended up working on a huge mess all by myself so I gave up. Later I started editing Blizzard's maps and surprisingly it wasn't really difficult to integrate a whole new Lore as a continuity to the original one.

Then you might like this dark night test ^^
(It's just a test, and obviously too dark I won't use it)

The trick is not trying to necessarily write a whole new world. For your setting, the players wake up without remembering where they are or how they got there (maybe they don't even remember who they are!). Maybe part of the fun of this setting is them trying to piece together information about this strange gothic world bit by bit, allowing you to gradually develop new lore as you go along.

Either way, good job and looking forward to more progress from this.

Yep that's the idea. Although the evolution of the story is directed, there's still room for player's influence and the consequences of their actions.

You could make it a bit darker than the images you posted above, I think the doodads, even maybe the texture should be visible, everything excessive is not good and beautiful, also don't forget to add lights(torches or lamps) on the roads or near the village(since you said is the only safe place).
Some pics below, just showing what I think would be better.

Actually it's supposed to be pitch black on the whole planet, or at least extremely dark because of the apocalypse and what triggered it. But since Marshmotte and the Vale are magically enlightened ( a sort of illusion), I'm trying to reach something a little darker than what you've got there on your first screen.

For the lamps, I'm currently trying to figure out how to properly use the vertex shaders.

M2 lighting may also do the trick for you. Below is what I got from playing around with the Cata lamppost model and lightadder.
