[PROJECT] City of Heroes-esque mod anyone?
« on: May 07, 2016, 01:44:23 am »
I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who would be interested on starting a City of Heroes/Champions Online esque mod for WoW?

Things that would need to be done:

- Gear has to not exist any more. Costumes have to exist instead. Need capes and symbols like that of what you'd see on a super hero. Would have to go to a costume designer to change your costume.

- A lot of custom abilities that would be things like super speed, super jump, flight, acrobatics.

- A cityscape world has to be created.

- Classes would need to be removed completely.

- All races would need to be removed except a shell of a human. Would have the option to basically create your own race with horn/skin color/wings at a designer.

- Graveyards don't exist anymore. When you die you get the option to revive at the nearest hospital instead and you don't have to run back to your body.

Any old City of Heroes fans would be interested in doing this? I would be able to make a ton of textures and costumes for this if anyone else can work on something else.

Hi there. The problem with moving too fast ingame is that other players can't keep up with how fast the client and server registers where the player is exactly in real time. In other words, you would move as fast as you would, but another player will just see you appear and disappear. If we think about it, that's exactly what we are aiming for here, but when we actually see this in action, it's terrible and breaks the game.

Everything else seems do-able.

p.s. I have never heard of that game before (city of heroes).

Flight would then need to be restricted to a speed that both the client and server can keep up to each other at. In City of Heroes travel powers (flight, super jump, super speed) were deactivated as soon as you used an ability or got hit by one so it might not be as game breaking as you think. But there is still advantage in appearing next to a player. Which is why the speed would have to be restricted. Maybe to fast flying mount speed 310%? Lower levels could only train hover which was flight but at a very restricted speed (think normal run speed but in flight).

What I am very interested in is super jump. Because there is the problem of fall damage. In City of Heroes/Champions online you didn't take damage when you super jumped unless you landed at an altitude lower than where you originally jumped from. I also don't think I've seen anything in WoW mods about increasing jump height. Which might need to be researched a bit.

Here is a following problematic situation:

-Player A super-speeds towards Player B.
-Player B suddenly spots Player A on his screen and targets him. He quickly casts a spell or attack at Player A.
-Player A (seconds ago) had already ran away far enough and out of Player B's line of sight.

Player B's attack never went through because Player A has a greater latency than Player B, therefor communicating much faster with the server than he does. (Player B lives much farther away from the server than Player A)

Yes, there are certain speeds that are fine. Finding them and determining what would be acceptable would be the challenge. As long as you can accept that the super hero speed concept won't be or look like something out of a Marvel Comics book, then you should be fine.

I am not sure about the super jump. It would look funny avatar-wise since the animations would either get stuck on the jumping animation or if the player is still travelling through the air, on the falling animation.

Are you sure if player A gets out of range the attack won't go through at all even if player B already did it? It would just be delayed wouldn't it? Also, is it necessarily a bad thing if the player flys out of range when he spots an enemy? Isn't that what you would do if you were on a flying mount?

I thought of another thing this mod would need. Graveyards don't exist anymore. When you die you get the option to revive at the nearest hospital instead and you don't have to run back to your body.

Edited.

Yes I am sure. Spells "hit" a target only if the conditions are met. Such as: Target is within range/distance. Remember I am thinking super speed as in Flash the super hero from D.C. speed. If you are thinking about a super speed as in the Rogue spell "Sprint" then it's totally do-able.

Easy.

Oh I wasn't thinking of that at all. The speed of the flash is way too fast for a game. In City of Heroes/Champions online super speed (running) is limited to 184% at MAX rank and super speed gradually gets faster the longer you run (up to 184% at max level). See .

Yea, no. The only spells that would be able to stop someone at that speed would be Instant Cast spells and they would have to have too far a reach. Which would be a bit op I think.

p.s. That is Flash speed level 1 or 2 btw

Well, I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing that you could only stop them unless it was an instant spell because that's pretty much how it works in CoH and WoW already. It might not be as OP as you think because pretty much every player would be travelling quickly in one way or another and as soon as they use a spell or get hit by one the speed becomes slow.

Also, in Champions Online if you get hit by CC while flying you get knocked off but if you enter combat while flying you just fly at walking speed but are able to cast while flying. I believe the same is true for all other travel powers in that they stay toggled in combat but are diminished.
