World of Warcraft: Into the Twisting Nether

[paragraph:2atr1fae]We are a project set up back in the earlier parts of 2013, and after several stages of development, we are intending to open our floodgates for a few testers, builders and model editors! Our intent is to breathe new life into a decrepit old game's fan-base through jumpstarting the entire franchise and propelling a millennium into the future! With the Alliance and Horde race lasting centuries, the arms race was passed and the space race came to a glorious end some decades ago now! With Azeroth left almost uninhabitable, the climate changed to an unseen landscape and the fleets assembled, the fight has been taken to the next battlefield, the final frontier, into the Twisting Nether![/paragraph:2atr1fae]

The Background

[paragraph:2atr1fae]The Alliance Republicans remember their past as does the Warsong Pact - both were once peaceful and docile people living upon their realms without war, without hope for conflict, but that has all changed. Since the touch of evil landed upon them, their people have been thrust into a never-ending war that has outlived the mortals and even the once immortal beings of the dragonflight. As the race to eradicate the other faction continued until the meaning of the conflict all but died out, their homelands were both consumed by their rage.

Now fragmented, the fight continues. With leaders in the cold ground and new ones taking the fight for a new generation, each faction saw out change. The Prophet Velen led his people from the Alliance who grew into vindictive and heartless men, whilst the night elves left to protect a realm that were under threat from a resource race between the King and the Warchief. Sense had left the souls of the people, but the passion for war had never left. The Protectors of the Realm took their bow, as did the Lordaeron Pact from the old Horde, who had wanted to serve their own interests rather than that of the Horde as a whole. Even that friendship did not last, and, without the Banshee Queen, the Forsaken were upon the brink of mindlessness.

The Lich King passed, and the Scourge went rampant. However, the Alliance had combated them with true tact, obliterating their existence with explosions and liquid fire pouring from dwarven fighters. The Cult of the Damned went into hiding, and has forever presumed to be nothing but legend. Yet conspiracies remain that their existence remains even now, lurking in shadows, infiltrating and awaiting their chance to turn the land under their spell. The Alliance saw out the Wrynn Bloodline, and a new king rose to the challenge, from the bowels of genealogy. His successor brought forth an elected council of men, whilst he was at the front of the battle against the Horde. Overtime, the elected officials took more and more of the monarch's power, draining each successor of more of their abilities until the abolition happened.

Yet the Forsaken, on the other hand, saw no such abolition. Their salvation was in sight, and their new Lord and Savior had appeared before them: the Demon Lord Varimathras. The Goblins and Gnomes continued their race to provide the best technological progress to their factions; the Goblins learn their lesson from Area 52 and crafted an ingenious interstellar vehicle - a nether-rocket. Yet the Gnomes found old tomes and information from their old allies, and stole tips and tricks from the draenei before designing their own contraption of immense stature. The elected Grand Admiral demanded that such a fleet be constructed, and the resources race between the Republicans and the Warsong Pact began.

With most of the realm consumed with liquid fire and radiation, life became rarer and rarer until species were made extinct and the landscape altered. The climate became hot some areas and frozen in others, an unusual phenomenon that baffles scholars even now to what has caused it. As the gnomes provided the fleet, the Dark Iron Clan stole several plans for the ships and began their own construction. Now, their clan exist as pirates among the stars, plundering the holds of ships and vessels across the Nether, whilst the Forsaken - ingenious - cheated, finding fuel from a depraved source unknown to all but Lord Varimathras and his Apothecaries.

With the Protectors of the Realm not willing to allow the Republicans and the Pact to decimate other planets as well, the Draenei constructed ships for both races to take to the stars, to prevent further chaos in the world. However, as the war was taken to the next battlefield... a dormant nemesis of the mortal races laid in wait. As Azeroth tore itself apart... the Burning Legion awaited the time that their enemies would consume themselves, and that time is now. The Twisting Nether is open for exploration and combat and travel and adventure... but their demonic denizens are preparing a welcoming that neither faction ever expected.

The most unique private server of its kind is opening itself up soon - this is World of Warcraft: Into the Twisting Nether.[/paragraph:2atr1fae]

TMI: Screenshots

[paragraph:2atr1fae]The current progress has been limited, as most of the work put forward is planning and design work. However, we have some things to show - the Alliance Commissioned Explorer (A.C.E.) Brilliance is the gnomish exploration vessel that is going into uncharted territories. This is the first ship that will be open for people to use in about a week or so, and is a current work-in-progress! However, feel free to comment and take a look!

For those interested in joining either as roleplayers or developers - feel free to comment on this thread and I shall begin to get in touch with interested participants! We have a "role list" of characters required, and that shall be put in the next post! But for now, screenshots and lots of them in the future:[/paragraph:2atr1fae]

You seem to know what you are doing client side, but do you have the ability to do the necessary server side work? Can you do it to a similar quality level?

The main reason many projects on this website fail because they are over ambitious or because they cannot do the necessary server side work to support their client work.

I would not put all your hopes on hiring someone or people to do the server side work for you - it is becoming a rare site to find a good developer who knows how WoW functions. :P

Since it is a roleplaying server, the focus is more upon the setting and atmosphere, however, we have people who can work client and server-side. I've got developers from CoA, Prologue, MotP, etc., who are on the team, all of whom with plentiful experience. That is not a worrisome prospect, I assure you!

Well the only developers who knew what they were doing at Prologue were Dynashock and Claiver, and Claiver focused on web-work and still works there and Dynashock quit due to real life time constraints. So that doesn't inspire much confidence.

But good luck none the less! :)

As I said, there are various developers (and I speak both client and server-side for developers) from different projects, both mainstream and private. Just one of our developers hail from Prologue, and was one of the more quiet of the crew. The rest have been sourced from other areas. Besides, it's not the places where the devs come from, surely, and is more about the work and experience that can be put towards the server.

You want more? You get more!

Here's just a few teasing screenshots of some more building. Other than the game design, we cannot show further due to one of our lead developers being on vacation but he shall be back soon. Our focus is on gameworld development, however, as we have a group of about two dozen hungry roleplayers wanting to get involved as soon as possible! We are looking for others to test out the Alliance-Commissioned Explorer Brilliance, a.k.a the ACE Brilliance. But enough jibber-jabber, more screenshots! Bear in mind that a lot of this is in-game building that isn't one hundred percent finished - we're waiting on a series of custom game objects!

EDIT: One of our members decided to make this using a custom model, a skybox and a dash of photoshop, thought I would share:

Unfortunately this project died a long while ago due to lack of interest. It seemed that science-fiction servers are a small, unsustainable niche. Plus our main developer was snagged by a paying position. However, I have just been drafted into another project - and just like this one, it'll be out of this world!

However, I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say, if anything at all, so keep an eye out for something big on the horizon!
