[ShowOff] The DarkLands I need some tips (:
« on: December 04, 2012, 05:51:55 am »

This is The DarkLands it is a shadowy continent that has been ravaged by flame, the Horde and the Alliance have joined together to reclaim it.

I've put many hours into this, this is my FIRST attempt to world build.
I've been following guides for hours.

The continent is 17adts by 17adts. it's rather large for a first attempt.
This is just one small part of the DarkLands.

any tips? Is it bad? is it good?

These are before I did small Retexturing and the one is before I did anything!

for a first try ist nice.

Try to add more hills, maybe little vulcanic things, burned trees or buildings.
and of course an other ambientlight with a simple dbc change ;)

Mountains should be less spikey. More textures should be used (adding detail).

Thank you for the feedback, I'll work a lot more on it, are there any guides for adding a second ambient light? Is it just another skybox?

I may be mistaken, but as far as I know WoW has only one global light source. Additional lights must be in the form of models (m2 files), but they're typically very localized and I'm not sure how far m2 lights can extend their influence.

Try to paint some ash textures, the terrain looks a bit bland for me... too rocky. Even in places like that grass was supposed to grow before it was reduced to ash. Try using some of Cata Hyjal or Firelands textures, but try to make your own style by mixing textures from different tilesets ^^

Also, the mountains look too spiky.

The concept is nice, though. I look forward to seeing you progress.

Thank you, this is probably a dumb question but is there anywhere that I can see the textures not in noggit? like I can go through all the textures so i can choose which ones I would like to use? or would fit the area?

View > Texture palette > Load textures > click on a folder (burningsteppes, etc.)

Also, to get Cata textures you need to extract them from Cataclysm and import them into your own MPQ, then you can import them the same way as the others. (same goes for MoP ones)

I imported all of the .blp's from Cata and MOP into noggit, however they just show up as white squares, not the actual Tileset, am i doing something wrong? is it more complicated than just dragging and drop the textures into the MPQ?

Is there anything special to importing Cata and MOP textures into wotlk? Do i just take the BLP files and drag them into a new patch? or what?
