[QUESTION] Saving textures messes them up
« on: February 16, 2015, 09:07:28 am »

Here is an example of where I converted a blp to png, opened it, made no changes then SAVED it (in correct format), converted it back to blp, and tried it ingame. The texture was missing in some spots, and stretched strangely in others.

Yes, I saved it in the right RBG/Indexed version. If I hadn't, the texture wouldn't have showed up at all.

Anyone know what could be wrong?

is the blp format of the reconverted the same as the previous? such as some blp's are DXT3 or DXT5, and sometimes the converter will make it a DXT1.

It may help to tell us what blp converter you are using, also supply it given a lot of things like this are named the same, and we may give you a suggestion to an alternative converter.  As not all converters are created equally naturally.

I tried all the BLP converters mentioned on Modcraft, including the two more popular ones BLP2PNG and BLPConverter. As far as whether the image is DTX3 or DTX5 I have no idea, and have no idea how to find out. So that could very well be my problem.

You find out by reading the export settings in BLPlab maybe..duh, But I doubt it will help you much I had the same problem, just use TGA, I exported every possible BLP version from BLPlab best I could get was still bad so I found this http://www.edowner.net/Texture-Tutorial/ and it works perfect for wmo and tried a char model texture in 3.3.5. Didnt test anything higher yet tho

And how do I get the CreatureDisplayInfo to look for a tga file? Or am I suppose to somehow convert the tga into a blp?

You quite never enter postfix into DBCs, always BLPs are being automatically looked for. So I don't thing you can use TGA in WoW. But I might be wrong.

ffs just insert it instead of the .blp you'll never get anything done if you keep theorycrafting about it forever, I would know lol Im like that :P just keep the name same if its undead_torso002.blp just put undead_torso002.tga should be fine, reads mine atleast

I had already tried that before posting asking if I needed to convert it. Didn't work.

Are you trying it on a 3.3.5 server? You're trying to change a druid skin right? Did you find the location of the blp in the MPQ erased the .blp and insrted the tga saved exactly like that tutorial format? Because I did it and it works for characters and wmo's, I'm doing it on dispersion server btw didnt try it on my local 4.3.4 yet

EDIT: also you're having a stretching problem did you check in photoshop if your edited image has the same resolution as the original? if I'm not mistaken its 96 for all wow textures

Replacing the blp with the tga didn't work. In fact it fucked up my common.MPQ but luckily I had a backup.

And it's the same resolution.
