How To Make Unlisted/Secure MPQ for Cataclysm and MoP
« on: June 28, 2015, 11:43:16 pm »
Okay so it's not really a way to secure an MPQ file but it's what people seem to call it, another word people use is Encrypting an MPQ, which it isn't either. We're just making an MPQ File that has no listfile on it to show other humans what is inside of the MPQ File.

This doesn't mean that it's not possible for people to still get the file/folder naming and structures of the contents inside, it just makes it a little more interesting for anyone who wants to try to "list" the MPQ file.

Shout outs to Soldan and PhantomX for their assistance with teaching me this, a lot better than my method that works solely for 4.0.3 - 4.0.6a.

Uh, there is a tool called FuckItUp somewhere in this forum which does that stuff with one click.

Last I checked that tool is for mac but if it works for windows 7+ and on mop mpqs that's nice.

Hey there master, um, no.  Wow kicks back an error so hard your kidney will blow out your back. Fuckitup doesn't do it correctly since for this to work in Cata/MoP, the MPQ's hash size needs to be a different size, no idea why, something in Wow versions higher than 4.1.0.  Give it a shot yourself and you'll see what I mean.

Fuckitup won't read Custom MPQ files with header sizes that aren't 32 bytes large. And in my tests, Wow 4.2.0+ didn't read Un-Listed MPQ files that didn't have a header size of 0xD0 / 208 bytes large.

If you feel I am just making stuff up, I'd be more than happy to make a reply video for you if you'd actually view it showing me making an MPQ for MoP using the standard methods and also using FuckItUp, whilst giving the Error.

It uses stormlib, so just taking the source, slapping a current version of stormlib over it and recompiling should fix that.

So um, you gonna retract your previous statement now? since you said all I had to do was use FuckItUp, now I have to update and recompile something?..... Uh....smh.  point being is that your original reply isn't true since there's more to it than just what you suggested, not to mention it sounds like you are saying it's something you just download and run.

This is a general idea for people that don't know how to compile stuff also without having to explain how to download stuff to compile and what changes must be done to do the things you suggest.  And your source literally says not to re-distribute the compiled file..... uh.... yeah.

I was never told that the tool no longer works, thus assumed it did. I would not suggest everyone to download and fix it, but suggest that instead of making a seven minute video, one should just fix it once, which probably is a few minute job.

I don't remember putting up any license stuff, so that's probably a leftover from stormlib itself. Nevertheless that clause likely does not apply for distributing a patched version in source and precompiled binary form.

Thus, I stand by my first reply: one should not do stuff manually if there is a tool available, even if it requires a few minutes of fixing, seeing that editing a video probably takes longer.

Point taken.
