Title: [BUG] Attachments are gone
Post by: Skarn on March 19, 2015, 05:30:18 pm
I noticed that some attachments are gone from the forum. So, some tools are now obviously gone as most of them are not hosted externally, or the links are expired. Please, have a look at the problem.

They are gone.

Is it a planned action or an error?

I have no idea what happened.

This forum is not stable and prone to disappearing at any given point. We've lost the shoutbox, the attachments, and eventually will lose the host since it is only being hosted on spare resources.

The alternate emu forum boards are not suited to this forums needs at the moment, I will look into what we can do in a couple of weeks when my real life is a little less hectic. I can get the OwnedCore sections changed, merged, and moved around so that ME and EMU is together and more organised. Alternatively a community funded forum may be a better alternative.

It's getting tiresome things being in so little control.

The attachments are completely under control. I just don't know what happened, just noticed it at some point. Probably I deleted them by accident or pressed a wrong button.

The problem is that some people won't probably agree with your idea. This forum has a lot of content and etc. So, everything should be thought and planned properly first untill people get to some common conclusion what to do with the board.
Edit: @stoneharry

Huh ?

You and a lot of contributors invest millions of hours (guess ^^) since many years into modding. There are many perfect hosters for less than 50-100 euros/year. Or do I miss the point ?

Any progress on fixing this?

This is hosted on some random guys server out of generosity. Subsequently we have lost feature(s) and the future is uncertain. There is no reason why we can't find alternatives, it just requires some time and organisation.

To detail on this, of 2309 attachments, only 1931 are left. I do not know what happened, but they are gone. Unless I'm totally missing out on something.

That's very bad because all the tools we have in the tool section are now missing. Also, I agree with stoneharry that there should not be a huge problem finding an alternative hoster if this one sucks (shoutbox restrictions, disappearing attachments and so on). If these files are completely gone we should somehow start collecting tools from people who still have them. Anyway, I am pretty sure that some unique old tools for smth like m2 modding are now gone forever.

Start whatever you want. We can't fix the issue, changing hosters sucks, I don't want to administer even more. If you want to do the job and can get people to use your solution instead, go for it.

Talking about the tools, thankfully Eluo didn't only post the tools through the attachments but also in two other servers. One of the servers doesn't work but the one that remains to be only working is the mediafire server download. That is the only working so far for me. If the mediafire server goes down, then we are really done for. But from what i remember, it has been more than a year since the attachments have disappeared, hasn't it?

Modcraft and the wiki of http://www.pxr.dk (http://www.pxr.dk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) holds knowledge of about 10 years modding experience which is nearly impossible to get elsewhere.

In respect to that we should really think about some serious hosting management.

So what we need is:
A hoster (no problem, I even can host it on our own servers)
Mediawiki Software (Opensouce, easy to install)
phpBB (Opensouce, easy to install)
May some additional tools
May a proper domainname ;-)

That's all.

The only work is to migrate the maybe corrupt forum content.

Once it's done, there will be not a big administration work anymore.

Well, that seems to be a good idea but here is another question. Is your hosting reliable? How long can you host the board?

I pay for my webhosting (where all players download up to 1GB of patches) + domain 7,3 euro per year. Both disk space and networking are limited only by words "Just don't overuse it too much.".

The price is not a problem I think because there are quite some people who may be ready to donate to keep the community working properly.

The main issue is that you guys want to go from "hosted by someone we don't know" to "hosted by someone we don't know", which is also why I don't even comment on "I could host it for you".

Yes, you are right. That is exactly what I meant in one of my previous messages.

Which is why I suggest a donation funded one or redoing the OwnedCore sections. A community funded one would not be difficult, webhosting is not that expensive. If nobody donates then we just make the forum db without account info public.

edit: It would still leave a few people managing it I guess, as the danger.

The hardest thing will probably be getting people to switch (back) to another website.

If the website is changed to another host (domain) on this domain there could be a message saying that the forum was moved to following domain x or something like this. This could be for some weeks so nearly everyone knows about the new forum.
