3ds max not installing

hey i recently uninstalled 3ds max so I could get my default settings back...
I am just learning how to use it really.
but I have a model that I cannot open because it is .max format and I need to make it another format.
so I can open it with something besides 3ds max.
Is there any way someone can convert it for me that has 3ds max?
or is there a program I don't know about that can open this format besides 3ds max?

can you save it use .3ds or .obj?then you can use MilkShape 3D 1.8.5 open it.
