Title: [Question] Alpha Character Models
Post by: The_Tauren on June 07, 2014, 11:08:47 pm
Is this possible? I'd like to use either the Tauren male pose or the Human's, but I'd probably replace every with their original alpha model.

I figure you have to convert the .mdx to a .m2, but I'm kind of stomped at that part. Does anyone have a recent tutorial in doing this? Thanks for your time!

I wanted the Troll female so I know how you feel. It's not the Warcraft 3 mdx, it's an in-between file between mdx and m2 and no one knows how to convert it yet :(

Or maybe they do and...We'll get an answer at last.

Phucko has a tutorial it seems. If you want, we should work on converting the alpha characters together! Two brains are better than one, after all.

Apparently there are no tutorials on how to do this. Still scouring the internet for some sort of guide.

To my knowledge no one has ever done this.

Maybe one day we'll find the answer!

None has ever done it because its a stupid thing to do, the current model are alot better and even if it was possible it would take hours and hours of work to get them functional and playable.

One man's junk is another man's treasure. Maybe years from now when I have a clue about model editing, I'll start the converting process.

Alpha models always fascinated me. So having them suable in 3.3.5 would be really nice.

Some of the alpha models remain in publicly released clients at very low display IDs (IIRC they start around 12 or 14). If you morph yourself on a server you’ll see that while the models have their own charm, they’re not very usable. Lots of animations are missing and the few that do exist are rather crude, and the models themselves are incredibly low poly. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that it wouldn’t be too difficult to take the textures of these models and construct new, much better models and animations for them, because they’re very basic.

The only difference between these that still remain and the player models in the leaked F&F WoW Alpha client is that these are fully clothed, so they serve as a good preview of what the alpha player models would look like in modern clients. I personally don’t think they’re worth the effort it'd take to convert them.

Actually some of the player models are there too.

Just do a search for UI_RS in model viewer.

But they're unanimated except for their idle post.
The models Iindigo mentioned are Alpha NPCs.

Would porting the animations from alpha work in wotlk? I'm really not that interested in the actual model, I just want different standing animations. I feel as if the Orc model, though slight in difference, has a better feel to it, along with the human standing animation. I'd love to see the troll's animations as well, they have a better stance IMO.

You mean ... You'll port the animations?

Or even better ... You'll convert the models?!?!? :0

Indeed, i'd be very grateful if you could help.
The models I would like ported are:

Wow Alpha Troll
TBC Alpha Blood elf female
TBC Alpha Blood elf male

Luckily some old school models still in wow share the animations of pre alpha character models. Such as http://www.wowwiki.com/Targorr_the_Dread (http://www.wowwiki.com/Targorr_the_Dread" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) for the orcs and a human NPC with this kind of standing pose http://www.scrollsoflore.com/gallery/al ... tman01.jpg (http://www.scrollsoflore.com/gallery/albums/wow_renders/Footman01.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

I wonder how the dwarves would look with their original animations. Basically the goblin anims on a dwarf model.

For Dwarves, there’s an NPC in CoT that uses an alpha dwarf NPC model.

I made a little gallery for the alpha models still found in WoW today. I used WMV to gather these pictures. I'm surprised to say that these models have a lot of animations, albeit some key ones like kneeling or sitting. Though i believe the ones we have for those are fine as it is. The real important ones are the standing and so on.

I managed to export a lot of models from the alpha a long time ago, but they don't have animations. I am trying to animate the female troll right now (it's easy, but she has a lot of geosets and i am quite slow):

I will probably release it when its ready.

I think the thing they want is the alpha animations, Inico. Also can you share how you got the geometry from the alpha models?

This is a great first step! Good work!

Feel free to share it when you're done!
