There are a couple hundred thousand ways to split connected meshes.  It just depends on the program you are using.. Here's my method for Cinema 4D:

May be best to actually watch it on YouTube, Fullscreened and in 720p atleast.

I need to eventually get to doing Livery Designs , Would be cool to plaster a server's logo on a car, I guess that would be nice for some servers as well, if they had their own cars with their logo's on them.

Generally that error occurs if you have too many polygons in your model.  If you have more than 19,990 Polygons in your model then you will get that error.  Other time is if you have more polygons than the Original Model you are replacing, you must remove the Emitter Information from the M2 Header like this:



Make it all 00's so it is removed.  Then M2Mod should work.
