Just my imagination running wild...

While this is something far beyond my ability to do, I think it would be cool if someone proficient in Noggit, took the best parts of Cata's updated Azeroth and somehow merged them into the vanilla maps. I don't mean change the vanilla maps dramatically, more like say, replacing vanilla Stormwind/Orgrimmar with the updated ones that look fine from the air, and fill in the "gaps" between zones from vanilla (like adding the Steampools between Silithus and Feralas and adding Diremaul's "exterior")to basically make vanilla Azeroth fly worthy but retaining the essential design of the vanilla zones (and keeping all their content intact). I'd even go so far as to add the additional cata Azeroth zones like Gilneas, Vashj'ir Uldum and Twilight Highlands just to make the world more "complete". Maybe even use the updated Hyjal for something accessible and useable.

I wonder if anyone has ever considered doing this and if private servers would be willing to use something like this even though it wouldn't be "blizzlike" in some people's minds. I think a 3.3.5 server with a "flyable" world and the additional zones would be pretty cool, and the cata zones are a blank canvas for quest building.

What do you guys think? Is this something you'd want to see done? Maybe someone here is up to the task and is looking for a project?

Even with a team of people, this would take a year or two with the current tools - I've definitely thought about making it fly-safe before, unfortunately the guy I was working for at the time really didn't like that idea, and wouldn't let me use time or resources on it.

Honestly, modding WoW and the people who do it are fickle, someone will start this exact project and quit before it's even half way done, only to have another person do exactly the same thing a month later. People take on more than they can handle and overwhelm themselves, it's the bane of modding a game that isnt made to be modded.

That said, this is more than possible, the Cata converting would be somewhat hard though, Gilneas for example has some map properties that can cause problems placed into Wrath :s Still, I've always wanted this done, at least bridging the gaps between zones! ^^

Filling those gaps with mountains or some ares with current tools will take not so much time as a few weeks ago. Since we are now able to generate pre-textured terrain.
By the way, it is better to overwhelm than underestimate yourself. If you keep thinking that you can do nothing, neither nor modding will ever evolve. Just my opinion. And for the fact that the game is not meant to be modded makes it special because you get a feeling of another victory everytime you overcome an obstacle.

@Topic-starter: If you want this done, take some time and learn how to do it yourself. Or offer some help in the areas you are good at and find some people to work together. And the idea is actually quite good.

I'm not even sure where to begin to be honest. I have no talent or skill with coding so anything that requires that is just well beyond me. I have some artistic talent and have used world editors for games like Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, but nothing more advanced than that. I'm willing to try but just figuring out how to use Noggit seems a bit overwhelming.

Any advice if I wanted to try? Like where would I find the most current version of Noggit? Any common pitfalls I can avoid as a newbie user? If I already had a version of the cata maps converted to wotlk, is there some way to "cut and paste" from one map to another for say adding in the new Stormwind and Orgrimmar maps? how does one turn any work successfully done into a patch for the game? I know how to make an mpq for dbc files but models is all new to me.

If its something within my ability to do, I'm willing to try. Time is the one resource I have in abundance. If its not within my ability alone I'd certainly be willing to help someone who wanted to. If nothing else I am capable of grunt work like data entry. As I said time I have in abundance.

I suggest you going though whole modding tutorials. While you want probably (and mostly) work with Noggit, knowing at least somethig about the rest is more than useful very often. About copy-pasting maps, you can always just pick an ADT, give it name of map you want to move it to, change its number (and thus coordinates) in its name, move it into folder of map you want to move it and use offsetfix on it And you are basically done. More info about fixing offsets can be found in those tut series I linked you above.
