why didn't it work?

The timing wasn't great as the release of the WoD pre-patch coincided with our population plummeting. There were also several other factors that convinced us that it probably wasn't worth waiting it out until the WoD hype was over.

TheBuG:
That's sad. I doubt you'll have a good time hosting a new realm before at least February if you want to attract a decent population.

But it's a good thing you didn't stop building ;).

Amaroth:
Uh, WoD hype on Blizz servers has anything to do with RP servers Oo? We have stable 30-40 online populations on our RP server, no matter what is happening anywhere else - and thats enough for playing (even 20 would be OK). But truth is that czech community is somehow smaller than english/international one. Still, if you don't expect/need hundreds of players... where else is problem? I never quite played RP anywhere else than on our local pure czech servers, so I have no idea how international community looks and behaves like in such matters. So I'm really just asking.

That's really cool that you have such a stable population. That's very unique compared to the English community. 'Serious' RP servers in the English community tend to start high and then drop to 0 over the space of around six months (or in our case about two weeks!) and then normally vanish or find some way of generating hype and starting over again. It could be that because you're a Czech server you provide a service Czech people might struggle to find elsewhere and so they come to you reliably.

I agree with you that 20-40 people is fine, and I certainly wouldn't have shut the server down if we could keep those numbers, but that wasn't the case. I'd really like to do another server and learn from our mistakes a bit on ToA, but as TheBuG says it won't be a good time to do another until at least February.

Anyway, here's some more stuff I made. Nothing fancy, just a few reskins for some of our player guilds:
