[SOLVED] [NOGGIT] How do you swap textures within a chunk?
(1/3) > >>
monsune:
Let's say that you have a chunk with all 4 textures chosen. You can switch between them and paint as you like, no problem. I also understand how to add textures to the pool on a fresh chunk, no problem also. But how do you replace them with a texture of your choice in texture browser? I was playing a bit with swapper but still can't get it. I struggle to understand this. It happened once that i managed to replace one of 4 textures in the chunk with some crazy key/mouse combo but it never happened again...
So for now, when i fill 4 texture slots in a given chunk, i can't replace them which can lead to serious problems if i change my mind and want/need another texture there. Is it me or is it really hard to achieve what i described?
I just wish you could do something as simple as pressing e.g. ALT+LMB on any texture slot in "Pick one of the textures" pop-up window to delete particular texture from the chunk and empty the slot. Could be very useful at times.
EDIT:
Partially solved by pressing ALT+SHIFT+LMB on the chunk = all textures are gone and i can easily fill them up again from texture browser. That's cool. Now i just wish i could do the same with a particular texture slot and not all of them at once.

I would bet thats in some of getting started tutorials... And btw, its also in FAQ.: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=10109
monsune:
Yes it is. But the process of swapping is kind of non-intuitive to me. A good example being that once you swap you don't see that new texture in "select texture" window. You have to close that window, start painting with new texture and then you open it again and there it is... instead that window should simply update the content of particular slot on the fly where swap took place. It also doesn't appear in swapper at all which is another flaw of the GUI design imho and could have been done a bit better. This function is very important from the design point of view and has to be as easy and intuitive as possible.
When being on it, i would love "to file" and "from file" for textures just like it is for objects now (pretty basic but works and that's cool). Kind of "favourite textures", similar to "view textures" but only for favourited ones. Would make it so much easier to collect and have useful textures handy.
I also think that i found a bug. After swapping a texture i can't paint anymore. Not just with the new one but any of them and same for all other chunks. The new texture appears in "select texture" just fine same as others. It just won't allow me to paint.
EDIT:
Wow. I just did it again. It is very easy to replicate these steps. Painting is completely locked after that and takes re-opening the project map to unlock...
Amaroth:
Auhm... whtf? There's no such bug.
To swap textures: 1. Select 3D paint tool 2. Click on Texture swapper. 3. Select texture you will want to get swapped. 4. Click on Set destination. 5. Select texture you want to have in place of texture you have used as destination. 6. Either click on Swap ADT to make this on whole ADT, or shift+click on chunks where you want to have textures swapped.
To start painting textures again: 1. Close Texture swapper by clicking on X. 2. And... paint?
Thats all. And it works for me without any problems. And while not being the most intuitive, I've figured that out on my own without any tutorial, and about 4 years ago, when I was a lot dumber than now :P :D. Absolutely no need for restarting Noggit, opening map again or whatever similiar to it.
monsune:
I appreciate this spoon feeding but you forgot one thing - you are not using latest Noggit. So trust me, there is a bug in new SDL. It's easy to reproduce and cause painting to lock completely while playing with texture swaps. I tried several times and it worked. It is somewhere between those combos that you have to do in proper order. I will sit on this tonight and try to either make a video or bring here a step by step instruction how to reproduce.
EDIT:
It took me a while to realize that i was wrong about the bug and i'm sorry about that. The locking takes place when swapper is open and that's it. Still i would call it an annoyance because when you change textures a lot when looking for something decent or trying to find a perfect match - you need to swap many times and closing and then re-opening the swapper is killing me.
Why not just make swapper extend the 3d paint window? So we could simply roll it up/down when needed while being able to paint all the time.
