Title: [1.12] Improved Models Patch: With Wolves!
Post by: spik96 on January 24, 2015, 08:33:50 pm
(http://b.thumbs.redditmedia.com/aetMRPVEDnE3u3qmEA3_n1pp9RsZJ84-u_C9uWBaW6E.png)
Hi !

I had a while ago the idea of porting some Cataclysm m2s in WoW Classic. I first converted the models with tools found on Modcraft and fixed little things like textures to fit the 1.12 lighting system.
Then I started my own tool (http://github.com/Koward/LKBC_Converter (http://github.com/Koward/LKBC_Converter" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)), allowing me to go further in the process.
Now the models come from all extensions, from Burning Crusade to Warlords of Draenor.
I hope you'll enjoy it ;)

**WARNING : THIS MOD IS ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH WORLD OF WARCRAFT 1.12.1. ANY ATTEMPT TO USE IT ON AN OTHER VERSION WILL RESULT IN CRASHES AND WILL BE USED AS PROOF OF YOUR STUPIDITY**

* Create new tree models with Blender to replace old ones

Tools used :
* CataToLK with particles by PhilipTNG (CT=>LK)
* My own converter (LK=>Classic)
* 010 Editor with M2&Skin templates
* Ladik's MPQ Editor
* GIMP&Blender

## Installation :
### Standard 1.12.1 server
1. Download the Standard version.
2. Rename in patch-X.MPQ (X have to be a number).
3. Place it in your Data folder.

### Nostalrius 1.12.1 server
1. **BACKUP THE PATCH-2.MPQ FILE OF YOUR WOW INSTALLATION**
Note : don't put your backup file in the Data folder, put it somewhere else or you'll be disconnected.
2. **I'M SERIOUS, BACKUP THE PATCH-2.MPQ FILE OF YOUR WOW INSTALLATION**
3. Download the Nostalrius version, enUK or enUS depending on which version you're using.
Note : you can check which version you're using at the bottom of your login screen. The version downloaded from their site is the enUK one. If you choose wrong don't worry, you'll just get an error message saying your files are corrupt.
4. Make sure the file is named patch-2.MPQ.
5. Place it in your Data folder. Override the existing patch-2.MPQ

Lovely.

Last year my project for 1.12 was importing the new water models to vanilla. I never finished it because I lost my files. Maybe that's an idea for you?

Importing quality items from newer WoW versions is always sweet.

Keep up the good work!

I don't really know which models you are talking about. The water from Vanilla to Wotlk is a sequence of (24 I think) pictures creating an animated texture displayed on the surface. The new water is made with shaders not present in the client. We can backport it in Wotlk only because early shaders are in the client but not used.

I would be very interested if you have an idea to make it possible. I'm afraid simething that huge might imply to decompile the client, and I don't really have the C/C++ level to handle that properly.

I guess it would be alot of work. I'm not sure how to do it either, if I did I would have done it by now unfortunately. :/

What about porting models from WoW alpha to 1.12? Could be a pretty interesting task.

I probably could try, yet I'm not interested in this right now in this. It would not be a part of this patch, as it doesn't deserve its primary purpose : improving 1.12 graphics while staying faithful to the original Blizzard artistic ideas, and keeping it playable for everyone on every vanilla private server out there without gamebreaking changes like new bridges where everyone would see you floating in the air.

BTW, I updated the patch with the Stormwind Signs thanks to stan84's help.

Added some smalls models from Warlords of Draenor. High poly barrel, crate and postbox.. It's not the most exciting edit, isn't it ? =)

With the upcoming release of various well polished 1.12 private servers, feel free to use this patch. There is no cheat whatsoever and if you don't like a change, you can delete it yourself (the MPQ is not encrypted) !

Your work on this seems amazing, going to dl it and try it out when nostralus hits on the 28th :D

I like the fact you're respecting what vanilla was, and only improving things that need improved (like mailboxes, fountains etc that DID need a little facelift) whilst sitll remaining true to vanilla.

It's nice to see stuff like this.

Keep up the cool work.

I checked it out, nice work.

Some stuff I noticed:
The Carrion Bird models have an issue displaying status effects like stuns, the animation is either going through the bird or displays below the bird, which looks kinda weird. Dunno if that's fixable or not.

The fountain near stormwind bank causes characters to "float" in the air above it, as if you were levitating. In comparsion, fountain in Cathedral Square has no such issue, the only floating thing there is the history writing about Archbishop Alonsus Faol.

I will try to find how the position stuns-like animations are in the M2 files.

Concerning the fountain, I'm afraid there is nothing I can do. These problems could only be solves by serverside modding.

The project looks awesome and keep up the good work. But is there a possibility to import wod character models into vanilla? I don't know if this question was asked a million times or not so don't rage at me but the only thing I am interested are the models. They look refreshing and give the game a new look, but in my opinion vanilla was the best wow experience eva! So combining these two factors would be a dream come true for a lot of players.

This would require a converter beyond my C++ capabilites. I'm afraid at my current level I won't be able to conver these models at the moment. That would be, indeed, fantastic.

hi

i did my LK2BC converter by compmaring strucures of m2 files the tbc 0x04 and  LK 0x08 version, both are well documented in wowdev. It was written in ansi C, im sure your friends could do it in very short time. Basic things like geometry etc could be done i one evening for skilled programmer,  it was my first program in c, im totally beginner in this matter.

cheers

After multiple trials, I can confirm we can't use my patch on Nostalrius at the moment due to their anticheat. This really grinds my gears, especially as my goal is not cheating, but I understand them =) . A model edit fix will probably appear some day, until then I don't recommend to use it on this server.

Seems to be ALL model swaps.

:(

I figure out how to do Model swaps and Nostrlalius has them banned!

Hopefully there's gonna be a workaround.

I agree that certain things should be blocked, but not ART.

Alright i think i know how to have model edits on Nostalrius.
If you merge your custom patch with the existing patch-2 inside the game folder, it doesn't disconnect you. Atleast with this patch.

This is the first thing I tried at the server release. I have been disconnected after ~10min :S
I also tried to merge patch and patch-2, then use my patch as patch-2 and as expected, same result.

They compute a checksum (MD5, maybe CRC if https://www.wireshark.org/docs/dfref/w/wow.html (https://www.wireshark.org/docs/dfref/w/wow.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) is right) of all expected MPQ files & WoW.exe and compare it with their own. Someone clever could modify the exe, forcing it to send the right hash to the server.

EDIT : Wait... I'm trying atm and it's working, I think I was always disconnected because I always made a backuppatch2.MPQ in the Data folder, so it was recognized as a model edit x) Thanks, Ghaster.
EDIT2 : This doesn't really concern my patch.. Maybe you should create an another thread explaining possible solutions ? It could be really interesting to discuss about it.

Note they only do this on the Windows version of WoW, not the Mac version. The patch works fine without disconnects on Mac.

Fixed a bug with the Carrion Bird "Run" animation and added some new spell effects added in Burning Crusade. Let me know if you encounter any bug ;) .

It would be the end of the road, really. First I must finish my converter to import animated LK models (like Crocilisks, Druid forms...) which is the step I'm working on at the moment (the code is on my Github, not completed yet). Then I'll have to complete it to merge .anim files, which shouldn't be long. Then, only then, I will be able to attempt converting the models. I really want them too, I'm a player like you.

Yo, tried to do merging and it worked. No disconnects.

Looks like we can finally do some stuff on Nostralius! I know I will!

btw spik bro, any idea how to fix green eye glow? by fix I mean disable, not expecting to get it to work on 1.12.1. For me it looks like a texture-missing issue, might need to edit a dbc file, right?

Missing texture.
Eye glows have an hardcoded path, meaning you'll need to put the texture in /BloodElf/ something.
You can look in the M2 with 010 editor and look for the path (which ends by BLP) or if it's initially a LK model you can use the converter in command line and add -t. The path to hardcoded textures of the model will be printed in the terminal.

What is "010" how do I find the path?

That one is the alpha blood elf, but I'm also using the converted BC blood elf.

I'm sorry, I meant 010 editor. It allows you to view binary files (=files that look like chinese when you open them) in hexadecimal. On the right menu, an ASCII (normal characters) version is showed. You search (using one of the menu probably called Search or try Ctrl F I don't know) ".BLP" and should you find.
It's the same probably this guy encountered : viewtopic.php?f=93&t=9235 (http://modcraft.io/viewtopic.php?f=93&t=9235" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Ah, thanks for clarification.

So these?

The path would be CharacterBloodElfMaleBloodElfFemaleEyeGlowGreen?

Worked.

Thanks Spik, replaced Gnomes with Belfs now. :D

Yep. As you can see there are really hardcoded in the model so the path will always be that even if you name your BloodElf Frog.m2 x)

EDIT : You are welcome ;)

What's up mate!
Awesome modification for the game, keep up the good work!
However, I can't seem to make it work for Nostalrius :/ I keeps giving me an error.

I got two installs off Vanilla WoW 1.12.1. One from Kronos private server and one from Nostalrius (both of their "official" downloads).
But everytime I try out your Nostalrious modification the game doesn't even start and gives me this error:
"Your login interface files are corrupted. Please reinstall the game."
I attached files showing both the Data folder and where I saved the backup :)
(Which I just realised are freaking small, but I guess you can rightclick them and open Image in new tab)

Am I doing something wrong? :p
Obviously your standard modification disconnects me from Nostalrius, as expected.

Nostrils might be using an EnGB (European) client where as the file spik96 is giving you might be from the enUS (American) client, so that's why you're getting an error. I'd suggest uploading another file for Nostrils that's patch-2.MPQ but for European clients.

Well, I guess before he does that I could find an enUS client to download and try that out. To me it doesn't really matter what client of those two that I use tbh :p

This doesn't make any difference to anything at all. EU and US clients mean absolutely nothing on Vanilla, same as Mac and PC files, literally the same stuff. To reiterate, they are the same thing, no change in client is necessary.

I recommend reinstalling your client, or running the repair tool in the folder, there is no visible issue (apart from the ton of junk files) in your WoW hierarchy, so I can't help you out. There is no way we can diagnose this with the information you gave.

By the way, this will work on Nostralius if you incorporate it into the patch-mpq, as will ALL swaps.

How did you "Install" the files?

Well, on Kronos they got their own little installer that downloads everything.
I just backed up patch-2 (not in Data) and then just dragged patch-2 from the zip download into the Data folder, overwriting the existing patch-2 file.

Kinda the same on Nostalrius. Downloaded their installer and then just did the same as above.
Got two clients installed that is.

Both of the clients works fine without the modified patch-2 file.

You.

have you made sure that you've installed it correctly?

You don't replace patch-2 unless you're playing on Nostralius, since nostralius performs the checksum.

If you're playing on kronos you simply rename Spiks file to "patch-5" or something, drag it into your folder, and it should work.

I just have the kronos client, it's still connecting to Nostalrius(realmlist modify, havn't had any problems playing on it at all).
And yes, I'm sure I'm installing the file correctly :p
So it's working for you guys? With his latest update?

EDIT: Trying out a pure vanilla 1.12.1 enUS right now (only changing realmlist to the Nostalrius one).

EDIT2: Okay, so it works on the enUS one. It had no modifications and it wasn't downloaded from any site connected to any private server.
I tried first without any addons or UI modification at all. Then added what I had from the Kronos client and Nostalrius client (both same addons/modifications) one by one to see if it would recreate the error. Nothing so far. It works perfectly.

So maybe Neyo was onto something there or both Nostalrius and Kronos "official" clients have been modified in other ways making the error possible. Either way, it works now :p

The Nostalrius version is just a packed one with Blizzard's patch 2 so people don't have to mess with an MPQ editor to merge files themselves. If there is region-related content in it I can merge and upload other versions but I'll need to find the patch-2.MPQ of every client. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

You don't have to appologize. I gladly helped finding that out. Easier to troubleshoot for other people.

If you want, I can send you the patch-2.MPQ for both Kronos and Nostalrius clients(if there is any difference).

Thanks for the report. I would appreciate to get the enUK patch-2.MPQ file.
As soon as I get it, I should be able to host a european version.

You mention in your to-do list that you might make brand-new tree models in Blender to replace the old ones... would you be willing to include an optional file that still has the old ones intact?

I doubt I can make optional files for everything. You would still be able to remove the models in MPQ Editor from the patch.
Anyway, I won't do that immediately, and one of my side projects is what I would call a Mod Manager for WoW. And if I ever do it, I would split this patch into smaller modules and you could chose to toggle one or another... But I don't see this happen before a year. There are still many Blizzard models I have to put in this patch before starting to expand to other projects.

I see. Well, I'll still be watching this space! Love the work done so far, though I ran across an issue  regarding the Stormwind fountains and memorial plaques... where the plaques are hovering where they were placed on the original fountain models.

Plaques are server side, at a given position.
The top of the model is slightly lower, so there is a gap between them.
The only fix to this would be editing the model with Blender, I think.

Nice work with your path. :)
Just found it while searching for the same thing for tbc. :D
As you stated this won't work for other patches than 1.12, could you explain why?
I always thought m2 format in tbc is the same as vanilla. Even if that's not the case, tbc should be able to read vanilla m2s. I'd love to use all the updated models from 3.x upwards while leveling.

Updated.
Fixed a bug with the Carrion Bird "Run" animation and added some new spell effects added in Burning Crusade. Let me know if you encounter any bug ;) .

I'm trying to fix the same bug with the StormCrowDruid model. Do you remember how you fixed it with the Carrion Bird model? The StormCrowDruid has the exact same animations as the Carrion Bird but I can't seem to figure out what you did to fix it.

EDIT: I randomly fixed it by changing some hex value from 00 to 8F (the value that sets numberOfTimestampPairs according to what my m2template.bt spat out). I have no idea why that fixed the run animation. Next project: resizing this monstrous bird...oh lordy

EDIT 2: Using Glitchy's software I was able to resize the bird and add more missing animations such as the sleep animation. Aside: frustratingly, I've not been able to get Glitchy to work with any non-native BC m2 file; that is, anything I convert using the lkbc_converter receives an error when I try to, say, add animations etc within Glitchy (specifically the LionSeal.m2 file, which I'm trying to add swimleft/right animations to).

You mentioned adding new spell effects in your patch. Were you able to convert WotLK spell m2 files and get them to work in the 1.12.1 client? I tried doing this with the updated Moonfire spell and it didn't work. Maybe it's a particles thing messing it up.

I'm not aware of the issue, a screenshot would indeed be useful.

Not yet but I'm close to. The few spells I added were from late BC or WotLK alpha.

BC and Classic M2 are not the same. Classic has less fields in Bones and Submeshes, but the most important change is the use of Floats (instead of Shorts in BC, LK...) inside Quaternions.
See https://wowdev.wiki/Quaternion_values_and_2.x (https://wowdev.wiki/Quaternion_values_and_2.x" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) if you want to learn more.

At the moment this project is in stand by as I'm rewriting a tool that should be able to develop this project furthermore.

The druid bear form wields the weapon when attacking, when it should be hidden. At least the staff is visible, haven't tested other weapons and haven't tested cat. It's a small thing but very off-putting for me. Perhaps there are extra animations in the new model file that shouldn't be there?

Nice work, though! Keep it up.

Hey,

So I'm having issues with this. I'm currently playing on Nostalrius and when I add the US patch.2.mpq file it tells me to reinstall the game, when I do the UK one, nothing changes with the game models.

How can i get this to work? I'm pretty bad with computers so I'm struggling to get this up and running.

Can anyone help?

Koward, any news on the bear thing? :)

Few other things you might consider:
- There is a separate model file for ghost wolves, I have no idea why. If I remember right, there are some rares with this model and there are definitely some ghost wolves in SFK. If it's not too much work, you could make a ghost version of the new model too.

- The elf (high elf) models in Vanilla are absolute garbage:

This annoyed me to no end back in Vanilla. They are not actually wearing any items, they have different skins for the same model. Do you think it is feasible to replace them with TBC models? I am not sure how one could change this. Somehow merging the TBC models with the models of some particular items, perhaps?

And do you have any idea why the camera for the male model is not focused on the face? Same thing happens with bats, btw.

There are 8 models in total now: mage, priest, hunter and warrior, one for each gender. The NPC Garek uses the mage texture but the model of a warrior, for some reason. There should be a way to fix this. I know people have changed their gnomes to undead and other such stupid nonsense, so this should be possible too. Any ideas?

P.S.
This is what Garek should look like:

Except maybe the texture should be the blue one, though red makes more sense for Badlands. However, in my modelviewer, the male priest and male mage do not have any additional textures to choose from. The mage has this red skin, and that is that. If perhaps changing the whole models is too much work, maybe it would make sense to change the textures a bit and fix this sort of thing? Maybe even add new textures for some NPCs?

Should be very easy to fix the high elf model to use tbc. You can move files directly from tbc alpha and then just do some dbc edits and bam ur done. It's can even possible to without dbc edits.

I will probably try it later today, if it works like I think it does then patch can be released today.

I'm eager to hear how that goes. Do you know if there's a DBC file that contains the information about which NPC has which model or is this on the server side? Or is it a combination of both i.e. the server tells you that the NPC is say "high elf male mage" and then the game looks in a DBC to check which model will be displayed for "high elf male mage"? If it's possible to change individual NPC's and one can port elves from TBC, then I'd like to play with the hair styles and gear etc. As it is, high elves have little variation.

I'm completely new to this, maybe I am asking silly things :)

BTW, I also checked leeviathan's druid forms patch, the bear also wields the weapon.

P.S.
Actually, all these NPCs were changed in later versions so whichever files decide which gear they wear and what hairstyle they have can just be copied.

Getting huge screentearing with the Nostalrius one, and it's only from the wolves. If I get too close to a wolf wow will crash.

Works fine if I delete the config file in WTF folder, but once i config graphics the tearing starts again. Tried enabling/diasbling v-sync, but no effect.

Problem fixed by enabling vertex animation shaders.

Thank you for doing the model changes, me and i'm sure others really appreciate the work you have and are doing.

Is there any indication on the status of the HD player character models and the other changes you have planned?

You are gonna need to restore to the original patch file. But instead of having files like this:
WoW FolderDataPatch-2.MPQCreatureCowCow.m2
It's now gonna be:
WoW FolderDataCreatureCowCow.m2
