Problems with swapping Humans to old Goblins (3.3.5)
« on: April 24, 2018, 03:53:21 am »
There being no way to play Goblins as a custom race on a server in which my patch does not work, I was left out of options but to swap them with an existing race (process which involves renaming all the BLPs of a model and including them into a patch).

I did so, and it ALMOST worked.

At first there were no faces popping up - just black heads that were unnaturally and magically connected to the rest of their bodies - and I had been wondering why. But after hours upon hours of experimenting with the files inside my MPQ, I have realized the problem was simple: There were no faces to begin with.

And there being no faces meant no faces to choose from in the character creation menu.

So then my next plan was to create some out of the existing Goblin material. It did sound easy in theory, but then turned out to be more complex in practice.
I had to extract the BLP files containing the Goblin bodies' skins out of their native folders and then proceed to edit them in Photoshop. Proved to be a bit confusing at first, but turned out to be very simple afterwards.

Next up, I saved the Photoshop project as a PNG file and converted its format to BLP. Not hard, very easy - all done.
I then added said file to my patch and started the game.

But to no avail.

As you can see in the picture below, my Goblin's head is no longer black but now green. And if I switch to another race then back, it will copy that race's facial textures and use them as its own.

At this point in time I'm completely clueless as to why this is so and if possible, I would happily accept any external help.

Photoshop is saving the .pngs at a higher pixel count than the wotlk client can handle. Its been a long time since I have messed with pngs, but if i remember correctly there is a extension for Photoshop that allows you to save the .pngs as 512x512 resolution ( what the png needs to be at for wotlk). do some googling around
